Choosing a Godparent

When considering Godparents for your child please note the following:

  • A child may have one or two Godparents at Baptism.

  • When two are chosen, Church Law indicates that just like our biological parents; one is male and the other female.

  • Some cultures invite numerous men and woman to be Godparents for their child. While this is a wonderful idea, given that a vast number of people are seemingly responsible to help the child grow in faith - in actuality Church Law requires two at most. The two principle Godparents are noted in the Sacramental Registers of the Parish and are indicated on the Baptismal Certificate.

Before asking someone to serve as your Child's Godparent please also consider:

The Religion of those intended:

  • At least one godparent must be a Roman Catholic Christian.

  • If one is Roman Catholic the other, if they are of a Christian Faith may serve as a Christian Witness.

  • Non-Christians are not able to serve as Godparents for Catholic Baptism, as their life is to give testimony to our belief in Jesus Christ.

Their Practice of our Faith:

  • Godparents must be at least 16 years of age.

  • Godparents must be fully initiated in the Catholic Church; meaning that they have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Holy Communion.

  • Godparents should attend Mass weekly and on Holy Days and receive the Sacraments of the Church.

  • If married or living with a significant other, Godparents must be married in the Catholic Church.

  • Godparents do not need to be married to each other.

Written Verification:

Please note that all those serving as Godparents need to provide written verification of their registration and participation in the Catholic Church if they are Catholic from the parish where they live and go to Church. For Baptisms at Saint Thomas the Apostle, use this form.

Please note that being registered as a parishioner indicates one is participating in the life of the parish, and on the written records of the parish where they worship.

Who is a parishioner?

Being a registered Parish Member is NOT the same as:

  • I've had all my children baptized in your parish.

  • I attended school here.

  • I went to a Wedding here once.

  • My children were all in CCD.

  • My parents go here.

  • My grandparents went here.

  • My family lives in this neighborhood.

  • This is a nice Church.

Since there are many different situations surrounding ones membership in a parish, please speak with our Parish Priests if assistance is needed. The bottom line is that Godparents need to practice our faith so as to assist the child being baptized in living theirs. Letters attesting to one's participation as a member of Saint Thomas the Apostle can realistically be written for those who are registered and support our parish by their presence at Mass and with their financial support. Please note however that failure to register and support the parish where we live makes it increasingly difficult to maintain the level of services offered to the Community.

To avoid unnecessary problems: Please consider REGISTERING today as a member of the parish where you live or choose to worship.
